### Install FONTTABLE Package

Source: https://github.com/wspr/herries-press/blob/main/fonttable/README.md

Run this command to generate the fonttable.sty file from the distribution source.

```bash
tex fonttable.ins
```

--------------------------------

### Control Page Breaks with \cleartooddpage and \cleartoevenpage

Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt

Use \cleartooddpage and \cleartoevenpage from the nextpage package to force content to start on specific page types (odd/recto or even/verso). Custom content can be provided for the blank page inserted.

```latex
\documentclass[twoside]{book}
\usepackage{nextpage}
\begin{document}
\chapter{First Chapter}
Content of the first chapter...
% Force next content to start on an odd (recto) page
\cleartooddpage
\chapter{Second Chapter}
This chapter will always start on an odd-numbered page,
which is the right-hand page in a two-sided document.
% Force next content to start on an even (verso) page
\cleartoevenpage
% This content starts on the left-hand page
Special left-page content here...
% Clear to odd page with custom blank page content
\cleartooddpage[\vfill\centerline{This page intentionally left blank}\vfill]
\chapter{Third Chapter}
If the previous chapter ended on an odd page, the blank
page message will appear on the intervening even page.
% Variant: clear to even page with content
\cleartoevenpage[\thispagestyle{empty}]
\end{document}
```

--------------------------------

### Reserve Vertical Space to Prevent Page Breaks

Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt

Use \texttt{\needspace} or \texttt{\Needspace*} to ensure a minimum amount of vertical space remains on the current page before starting new content. The starred version forces a page break if the space cannot be reserved.

```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{needspace}
\begin{document}
\section{Introduction}
Some introductory text...
% Ensure at least 4 baseline heights remain on page
% before starting this content
\needspace{4\baselineskip}
\subsection{Important Definition}
This definition and the following explanation should
appear together on the same page.
% More precise space reservation (use between paragraphs)
\Needspace{5cm}
\begin{itemize}
  \item First item
  \item Second item
  \item Third item
  \item Fourth item
\end{itemize}
% With flush bottom (starred version)
\Needspace*{3cm}
\begin{quote}
  This important quote needs to stay together and
  the page will be flush bottom if broken.
\end{quote}
% Practical use: keep figure with its caption
\needspace{8\baselineskip}
\begin{figure}[h]
  \centering
  \rule{5cm}{3cm} % placeholder
  \caption{A figure that stays with its caption}
\end{figure}
\end{document}
```

--------------------------------

### Generate Manual with makeindex (Optional)

Source: https://github.com/wspr/herries-press/blob/main/fonttable/README.md

Optionally, use makeindex with the provided .ist file to generate an index for the manual. This step should be followed by another pdflatex run.

```bash
makeindex -s gind.ist fonttable.idx
pdflatex fonttable.dtx
```

--------------------------------

### Generate Manual with pdflatex

Source: https://github.com/wspr/herries-press/blob/main/fonttable/README.md

Use pdflatex to compile the .dtx file and generate the package manual. This may involve multiple runs.

```bash
pdflatex fonttable.dtx
```

--------------------------------

### Customize Maketitle and Thanks

Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt

Control the formatting of the title, author, and date using \texttt{pre} and \texttt{post} commands. Extend \texttt{\maketitle} with \texttt{\maketitlehookd}. Access title elements with \texttt{\thetitle}, \texttt{\theauthor}, and \texttt{\thedate}.

```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{titling}
% Pre-title content
\pretitle{\begin{center}\LARGE\bfseries}
\posttitle{\par\end{center}\vskip 0.5em}
% Author formatting
\preauthor{\begin{center}\large\lineskip 0.5em\begin{tabular}[t]{c}}
\postauthor{\end{tabular}\par\end{center}}
% Date formatting
\predate{\begin{center}\small}
\postdate{\par\end{center}}
% Add content after \maketitle
\renewcommand{\maketitlehookd}{
  \begin{center}
    \small Version 1.0 -- Draft
  \end{center}
}
\title{Document Title}
\author{First Author \and Second Author}
\date{\today}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
% Access title elements later in document
\section{Introduction}
This paper titled ``\thetitle'' was written by \theauthor{} on \thedate.
% Create a second title page
\newpage
\title{A Different Title}
\author{Another Author}
\maketitle
\end{document}
```

### Configure Epigraph Appearance

Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt

Set the width, rule visibility, and alignment for epigraphs and their sources. Use exttt{epigraphtextposition} to control text alignment.

```latex
\documentclass{book}
\usepackage{epigraph}
% Configure epigraph appearance
\setlength{\epigraphwidth}{0.6\textwidth}
\setlength{\epigraphrule}{0pt}  % No rule between quote and source
\renewcommand{\epigraphflush}{center}
\renewcommand{\sourceflush}{flushright}
\begin{document}
\chapter{The Journey Begins}
\epigraph{The only way to do great work is to love what you do.}
         {\textit{Steve Jobs}}
Chapter content begins here after the epigraph...
% Multiple epigraphs together
\chapter{Philosophy}
\epigraphtextposition{flushleft}
\epigraph{I think, therefore I am.}{\textsc{Ren\'e Descartes}}
\epigraph{The unexamined life is not worth living.}{\textsc{Socrates}}
% Epigraph at chapter end
\section{Conclusion}
The chapter ends with reflection...
\qitem{All good things must come to an end.}{\textit{Geoffrey Chaucer}}
\end{document}
```

### Configure Booklet Signature Printing with \source and \target

Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt

The booklet package arranges pages for signature printing. Configure the source page size and target sheet size using \source and \target commands before the document content.

```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{booklet}
% Configure for specific paper and target size
\source{\magstep0}{5.5in}{8.5in}  % Source page size
\target{\magstep0}{8.5in}{11in}   % Target sheet size
\begin{document}
\title{My Booklet}
\author{Author Name}
\maketitle
\section{Introduction}
This document will be arranged for booklet printing.
When printed two-up and folded, pages will be in order.
\section{Content}
More content for the booklet...
\newpage
Page 3 content...
\newpage
Page 4 content...
% The package rearranges these pages for signature printing:
% Sheet 1 front: page 4, page 1
% Sheet 1 back:  page 2, page 3
% When folded and nested, pages read 1-2-3-4
\end{document}
```

### Control Abstract Environment with abstract package

Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt

The abstract package allows control over the abstract environment's typesetting, enabling it to span columns in a two-column document and customize heading styles. It also supports adding rules above and below the abstract.

```latex
\documentclass[twocolumn]{article}
\usepackage{abstract}
% Make abstract span both columns in two-column mode
\renewcommand{\abstractnamefont}{\normalfont\bfseries}
\renewcommand{\abstracttextfont}{\normalfont\small\itshape}
% Add horizontal rules above and below abstract
\setlength{\absleftindent}{0pt}
\setlength{\absrightindent}{0pt}
\setlength{\absparindent}{0pt}
\begin{document}
\title{My Research Paper}
\author{Author Name}
\date{\today}
\twocolumn[
  \begin{@twocolumnfalse}
    \maketitle
    \begin{abstract}
      This abstract will span both columns in a two-column document.
      The abstract package allows fine control over formatting including
      font styles, indentation, and rules. This is particularly useful
      for journal submissions that require specific abstract formatting.
    \end{abstract}
    \vspace{1em}
  \end{@twocolumnfalse}
### Define Custom Caption Styles with ccaption
Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt
Use ccaption to customize caption appearance, including font styles and delimiters. Requires \usepackage{ccaption}.
```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{ccaption}

% Define caption style
\captionnamefont{\bfseries\small}
\captiontitlefont{\small}
\captiondelim{ -- }

\begin{document}

% Standard caption with custom formatting
\begin{figure}[h]
  \centering
  \rule{4cm}{3cm}
  \caption{A standard figure caption}
\end{figure}

% Continuation caption for multi-part figures
\begin{figure}[h]
  \centering
  \rule{4cm}{3cm}
  \contcaption{Continued from previous page}
\end{figure}

% Legend (unnumbered caption)
\begin{figure}[h]
  \centering
  \rule{4cm}{3cm}
  \legend{This is a legend without a figure number}
\end{figure}

% Bilingual caption
\begin{figure}[h]
  \centering
  \rule{4cm}{3cm}
  \bicaption{English caption text}
            {Texto del pie de foto en espa\~nol}
\end{figure}

% Named legend with label
\begin{figure}[h]
  \centering
  \rule{4cm}{3cm}
  \namedlegend{Diagram}{Schematic of the system architecture}
\end{figure}

% Create a new float type
\newfloat{program}{lop}{Program}
\begin{program}
  \begin{verbatim}
  print("Hello, World!")
  \end{verbatim}
  \caption{A simple Python program}
\end{program}

\listof{program}{List of Programs}

\end{document}
```
--------------------------------
### Display LaTeX Lengths with \printlength
Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt
The printlen package's \printlength command displays the value of a LaTeX length in a specified unit (e.g., cm, in, pt). Use \uselengthunit to set the desired unit for subsequent \printlength commands.
```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{printlen}

\begin{document}

\section{Current Page Layout}

% Print lengths in different units
\uselengthunit{cm}
\begin{tabular}{ll}
  Text width:   & \printlength{\textwidth} \\
  Text height:  & \printlength{\textheight} \\
  Margin width: & \printlength{\marginparwidth} \\
\end{tabular}

% Change unit for display
\uselengthunit{in}
\begin{tabular}{ll}
  Text width:   & \printlength{\textwidth} \\
  Line width:   & \printlength{\linewidth} \\
\end{tabular}

% Print in points
\uselengthunit{pt}
Font size: \printlength{\baselineskip}

% Useful for debugging custom lengths
\newlength{\mylength}
\setlength{\mylength}{3.5cm}
\uselengthunit{mm}
My custom length is: \printlength{\mylength}

\end{document}
```
### Create Long Tables Across Pages with xtab
Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt
The xtab package extends supertabular to create long tables that break across pages, featuring customizable headers and footers on each page. It requires defining the table caption, headers, and footers before the xtabular environment.
```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xtab}

\begin{document}

% Define table caption, headers, and footers
\tablecaption{List of World Countries}
\tablehead{
  \hline
  \textbf{Rank} & \textbf{Country} & \textbf{Population} & \textbf{Continent} \\
  \hline
}
\tabletail{
  \hline
  \multicolumn{4}{r}{\textit{Continued on next page...}} \\
}
\tablelasttail{\hline}

% The xtabular environment handles page breaks
\begin{xtabular}{|c|l|r|l|}
1 & China & 1,411,778,724 & Asia \\
2 & India & 1,380,004,385 & Asia \\
3 & United States & 331,002,651 & North America \\
4 & Indonesia & 273,523,615 & Asia \\
5 & Pakistan & 220,892,340 & Asia \\
6 & Brazil & 212,559,417 & South America \\
7 & Nigeria & 206,139,589 & Africa \\
8 & Bangladesh & 164,689,383 & Asia \\
9 & Russia & 145,934,462 & Europe/Asia \\
10 & Mexico & 128,932,753 & North America \\
% ... many more rows ...
11 & Japan & 126,476,461 & Asia \\
12 & Ethiopia & 114,963,588 & Africa \\
13 & Philippines & 109,581,078 & Asia \\
14 & Egypt & 102,334,404 & Africa \\
15 & Vietnam & 97,338,579 & Asia \\
\end{xtabular}

% Variant with controlled shrinking for page fit
\xentrystretch{-0.1}
\begin{xtabular}{|l|l|}
\hline
\textbf{Term} & \textbf{Definition} \\
\hline
Alpha & First letter of Greek alphabet \\
Beta & Second letter of Greek alphabet \\
Gamma & Third letter of Greek alphabet \\
\hline
\end{xtabular}

\end{document}
```
### Move FONTTABLE to LaTeX Directory
Source: https://github.com/wspr/herries-press/blob/main/fonttable/README.md
After generating fonttable.sty, move it to a location where LaTeX can find it, such as the texmf-local directory.
```bash
mv fonttable.sty /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/fonttable.sty
```
### Typeset Poetry with verse package
Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt
The verse package enhances poetry typesetting with custom indentation and line numbering. Configure indentation with \setlength{\vgap} and \setlength{\vindent}, and line numbering with \setverselinenums.
```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{verse}

% Configure indentation unit
\setlength{\vgap}{1em}
\setlength{\vindent}{2em}

% Configure line numbering
\setverselinenums{1}{5} % Number every 5th line

\begin{document}

\poemtitle{The Road Not Taken}
\begin{verse}[\versewidth]
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,\nAnd sorry I could not travel both\nAnd be one traveler, long I stood\nAnd looked down one as far as I could\nTo where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,\nAnd having perhaps the better claim,\nBecause it was grassy and wanted wear;\nThough as for that the passing there\nHad worn them really about the same,

\end{verse}
\attmark{Robert Frost}

% Indentation patterns using special characters
\poemtitle{Limerick}
\begin{verse}
There once was a man from Nantucket\nWho kept all his cash in a bucket.!.\
\vin But his daughter, named Nan,!.\
\vin Ran away with a man\
And as for the bucket, Nan took it.
\end{verse}

% Alternating indents for ballad meter
\indentpattern{01}
\begin{verse}
\begin{patverse}
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound\
That saved a wretch like me!\
I once was lost, but now am found;\
Was blind, but now I see.
\end{patverse}
\end{verse}

\end{document}
```
### Create Hanging Paragraphs with hanging package
Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt
Utilize the hanging package for creating paragraphs where subsequent lines are indented. Use \hangpara for single paragraphs or the hangparas environment for multiple.
```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{hanging}

\begin{document}

\section{Hanging Paragraphs}

% Single hanging paragraph
\hangpara{2em}{1}
This is a hanging paragraph. The first line starts at the left margin,
but all subsequent lines are indented by 2em. This style is commonly
used for bibliographies, glossaries, and dictionary entries where the
first word or term needs to stand out.

% Multiple hanging paragraphs
\begin{hangparas}{3em}{1}
First entry: This is the first paragraph in a series of hanging
paragraphs. All lines after the first are indented.

Second entry: Another hanging paragraph continues the pattern.
The consistent indentation helps readers scan entries quickly.

Third entry: The environment makes it easy to create multiple
entries with the same hanging indent formatting.
\end{hangparas}

% Negative hangafter (first N lines indented)
\hangpara{2em}{-2}
In this example, the first two lines are indented, and the remaining
lines return to the normal margin. This creates the opposite effect
of a typical hanging paragraph, sometimes called a "reverse indent."

### Customize Table of Contents with tocloft

Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt

Use the tocloft package to customize fonts, spacing, leaders, and page numbers for the Table of Contents, List of Figures, and List of Tables. It also allows for the creation of new 'List of...' entries.

```latex
\documentclass{report}
\usepackage{tocloft}
% Customize the Table of Contents title
\renewcommand{\cfttoctitlefont}{\hfill\Large\bfseries}
\renewcommand{\cftaftertoctitle}{\hfill}
% Customize chapter entries in ToC
\renewcommand{\cftchapfont}{\bfseries}
\renewcommand{\cftchappagefont}{\bfseries}
\setlength{\cftbeforechapskip}{1em}
% Customize section entries
\renewcommand{\cftsecfont}{\itshape}
\setlength{\cftsecindent}{2em}
\setlength{\cftsecnumwidth}{3em}
% Change the dots (leaders) between title and page number
\renewcommand{\cftdot}{.}
\renewcommand{\cftdotsep}{4.5}
% Create a new list (e.g., List of Algorithms)
\newcommand{\listalgorithmname}{List of Algorithms}
\newlistof{algorithm}{loa}{\listalgorithmname}
\newcommand{\algorithm}[1]{%
  \refstepcounter{algorithm}
  \par\noindent\textbf{Algorithm \thealgorithm: #1}
  \addcontentsline{loa}{algorithm}{\protect\numberline{\thealgorithm}#1}
}
### Control Hyphenation with hyphenat
Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt
The hyphenat package offers commands to manage hyphenation. Use \hyp{} for controlled hyphenation within words, \nohyphens{} to prevent hyphenation of specific words or passages, and the 'htt' option to allow hyphenation in typewriter font.
```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[htt]{hyphenat}
% Options: htt = allow hyphenation in \texttt

\begin{document}

\section{Hyphenation Control}

% Allow hyphenation after explicit hyphens
The composer's \hyp{self}\hyp{deprecating} humor was
evident in this \hyp{tongue}\hyp{in}\hyp{cheek} piece.

% Prevent hyphenation of a word
This \nohyphens{extremely-long-compound-word} should never
be hyphenated, even if it extends past the margin.

% Block hyphenation for a passage
\begin{nohyphens}
This entire paragraph will not have any automatic hyphenation
applied to it, which can be useful for certain technical
content or proper nouns that should remain intact.
\end{nohyphens}

% Allow hyphenation in typewriter font (with htt option)
The command \texttt{very-long-function-name-here} can now
be hyphenated at line breaks when needed.

% Shortcuts for compound words
\newcommand{\email}{\hyp{e}\hyp{mail}}
Send me an \email{} about the project.

\end{document}
```
### Enhance Appendix Handling with appendix package
Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt
The appendix package provides enhanced control over appendix typesetting, including per-chapter or per-section appendices and automatic addition to the Table of Contents. It supports a main 'Appendices' section and sub-appendices within chapters.
```latex
\documentclass{report}
\usepackage[toc,page]{appendix}

\begin{document}

\chapter{Main Content}
Regular chapter content here...

\chapter{Methods}
Another chapter with methods...

% Start appendices with a page announcing "Appendices"
\begin{appendices}

\chapter{Supplementary Data}
This appears as "Appendix A: Supplementary Data" in the document
and Table of Contents.

\section{Dataset Description}
Details about the dataset...

\chapter{Code Listings}
This appears as "Appendix B: Code Listings"

\end{appendices}

% Subappendices within a chapter
\chapter{Analysis}
Main analysis content...

\begin{subappendices}
\section{Derivation of Equation 1}
This creates a section-level appendix within the chapter.
\section{Additional Proofs}
More supplementary material...
\end{subappendices}

\end{document}
```
### Add Document Elements to ToC with tocbibind
Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt
Use the tocbibind package to automatically include elements like the bibliography, index, and lists of figures/tables in the Table of Contents. Options like 'nottoc', 'notlot', and 'notlof' can exclude specific elements.
```latex
\documentclass{report}
\usepackage[nottoc,notlot,notlof]{tocbibind}

% Options:
% nottoc - don't add ToC to itself
% notlot - don't add List of Tables
% notlof - don't add List of Figures
% notbib  - don't add Bibliography
% notindex - don't add Index

\begin{document}

\tableofcontents  % Won't list itself (nottoc option)
\listoffigures % Won't be in ToC (notlof option)
\listoftables % Won't be in ToC (notlot option)

\chapter{Introduction}

\begin{figure}[h]
  \centering
  \rule{3cm}{2cm}
  \caption{Sample figure}
\end{figure}

\begin{table}[h]
  \centering
  \begin{tabular}{|c|c|}
    \hline
    A & B \\
    \hline
  \end{tabular}
  \caption{Sample table}
\end{table}

% Bibliography WILL appear in ToC (not excluded)
\begin{thebibliography}{9}
\bibitem{latex} Leslie Lamport. \textit{\LaTeX: A Document

### Adjust Page Layout Mid-Document

Source: https://context7.com/wspr/herries-press/llms.txt

Temporarily alter text width using the \texttt{adjustwidth} environment. Use \texttt{adjustwidth*} for page-aware adjustments on odd/even pages. Detect page parity with \texttt{\checkoddpage} and \texttt{\ifoddpage}.

```latex
\documentclass{book}
\usepackage[strict]{changepage}
\begin{document}
\chapter{Standard Layout}
This text uses the normal page margins defined in the document class.
% Temporarily widen the text block
\begin{adjustwidth}{-1cm}{-1cm}
This paragraph extends 1cm into both the left and right margins,
useful for wide tables or figures that need extra space.
\end{adjustwidth}
% Narrow the text block (indent both sides)
\begin{adjustwidth}{2cm}{2cm}
This text is indented 2cm from both margins, creating a
block quote effect without using the quote environment.
This gives more control over the indentation amount.
\end{adjustwidth}
% Page-aware adjustments (different for odd/even pages)
\begin{adjustwidth*}{0cm}{-2cm}
On odd pages, this extends into the right margin.
On even pages, this extends into the left margin,
maintaining consistent outer margin extension.
\end{adjustwidth*}
% Check if on odd or even page
\checkoddpage
\ifoddpage
  This is an odd-numbered page.
\else
  This is an even-numbered page.
\fi
\end{document}
```
