### Add File Types via PHP (Standard Installation)

Source: https://wpmudev.com/docs/hosting/wordpress-multisite-networks

For standard WordPress installations, file types can be added using a PHP snippet placed in the mu-plugins directory. This method allows for programmatic control over allowed MIME types.

```php
/*
Plugin Name: Custom Mime Types
Description: Adds custom mime types to WordPress.
Version: 1.0
Author: WPMU DEV
*/
function custom_mime_types( $mimes ) {
    // Add new mime types
    $mimes['svg'] = 'image/svg+xml';
    $mimes['webp'] = 'image/webp';
    return $mimes;
}
add_filter( 'upload_mimes', 'custom_mime_types' );
// Example of adding a new mime type for a specific file extension
function add_custom_mime_type( $mime_types ) {
    $mime_types['ai'] = 'application/postscript'; // Adobe Illustrator
    return $mime_types;
}
add_filter('mime_types', 'add_custom_mime_type');
// To remove a mime type, you would typically unset it if it was added by another plugin or theme.
// For example, to remove 'exe' if it was previously allowed:
/*
function remove_mime_types( $mime_types ) {
    if ( isset( $mime_types['exe'] ) ) {
        unset( $mime_types['exe'] );
    }
    return $mime_types;
}
add_filter( 'upload_mimes', 'remove_mime_types' );
*/
// The code above is a representative PHP snippet for adding mime types.
// The actual implementation might vary based on the specific requirements or the content of the gist.
