resize -N decrease current region by N
resize N set current region to N
resize 20% set current region to 20% of original size
resize +20% increase current region by 20%
resize -b = make all windows equally
resize max      maximize current region
resize min      minimize current region
```
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Example prompt and command that the shelltitle auto-title expects. The title looks after the '> ' for the command name.
```text
/usr/joe/src/dir> trn

```
--------------------------------
### Start niced top in window 2
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Add this line to your .screenrc to start a niced version of the `top` command in window 2 named 'top' rather than 'nice'.
```screenrc
screen -t top 2 nice top

```
--------------------------------
### displays command example output
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Example output of the `displays` command, showing a tabular listing of connected user front-ends. The legend below explains each column: terminal type, geometry, username, device, blocking mode, window number, window title, shared status, and window permissions.
```text
xterm 80x42   jnweiger@/dev/ttyp4      0(m11)    &rWx
facit 80x24   mlschroe@/dev/ttyhf nb  11(tcsh)    rwx
xterm 80x42   jnhollma@/dev/ttyp5      0(m11)    &R.x
 (A)   (B)       (C)     (D)     (E)  (F)(G)    (H)(I)

```
### Compile screen with configure and make
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Commands to compile and install screen. Run 'sh ./configure' to create config.h and Makefile, then run 'make'. If make fails to produce term.h, comm.h, or tty.c, use the corresponding .dist files.
```shell
sh ./configure
```
```shell
make
```
### layout dump command example
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Writes the current layout's split order to the specified file. If the file exists, the layout is appended. The default filename is layout-dump in the startup directory.
```screen
layout dump /home/user/.screenrc

```
--------------------------------
### Copy mode repeat count example
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
In copy mode, prefixes commands with a repeat count. This example copies lines 11 to 15 into the paste buffer.
```screen
`C-a C-[ H 10 j 5 Y`
```
### XC example for xterm emulation
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Example termcap entry for an xterm that emulates part of the German ('K') charset. When switching to the 'K' charset, '\E(B' is sent to the terminal, and the mappings are straightforward: '[' to '\304', '\' to '\326', and ']' to '\334'.
```plaintext
    termcap xterm 'XC=K%,%\E(B,[\304,\\\326,]\334'

```
--------------------------------
### markkeys command example
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Sets copy/history mode keys to be more familiar to emacs users. The string is made up of oldchar=newchar pairs separated by ':'.
```screen
markkeys h=^B:l=^F:$=^E
```
--------------------------------
### bind command examples
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Binds the space key to the windows command, C-f to create a TELNET window to foobar, and ESC to create a non-login window with title 'root' in slot #9 with a superuser shell and 1000-line scrollback buffer.
```screen
bind ' ' windows
bind ^f screen telnet foobar
bind \033 screen -ln -t root -h 1000 9 su

```
--------------------------------
### Example screen for su auto-title
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Example screen content for the auto-title binding. The user typed the csh history command `!em` which ran the previously entered `emacs` command. The window status shows 'root:emacs' during execution and reverts to 'root:' at completion.
```text
% !em
emacs file.c

```
--------------------------------
### attrcolor command examples
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
These examples show how to use the attrcolor command to modify text attributes. The first changes color to bright red for bold text, the second uses blue instead of underline, the third uses bright colors for bold, and the fourth makes bright colored text bold.
```screen
attrcolor b "R"
```
```screen
attrcolor u "-u b"
```
```screen
attrcolor b ".I"
```
```screen
attrcolor i "+b"
```
--------------------------------
### screen command in .screenrc
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Example .screenrc lines that create a shell window in window #1 and a TELNET window (no flow control, title 'foobar', window #2) with logging enabled, writing 'screenlog.2'.
```screenrc
# example for .screenrc:
screen 1
screen -fn -t foobar 2 -L telnet foobar

```
--------------------------------
### bind command class demo1 with bindkey
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Creates command class demo1 binding keys 0, 1, 2 to select windows 10, 11, 12, then binds C-b to activate that class, so C-b 0 selects window 10, C-b 1 window 11, etc.
```screen
bind -c demo1 0 select 10
bind -c demo1 1 select 11
bind -c demo1 2 select 12
bindkey "^B" command -c demo1

```
--------------------------------
### bind command class demo2 with bind -
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Creates command class demo2 binding keys 0, 1, 2 to select windows 10, 11, 12, then binds the '-' key to activate that class, so C-a - 0 selects window 10, C-a - 1 window 11, etc.
```screen
bind -c demo2 0 select 10
bind -c demo2 1 select 11
bind -c demo2 2 select 12
bind - command -c demo2

```
--------------------------------
### XC example for hp700 terminal
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Example termcap entry for an hp700 terminal with a German charset, translating ISOlatin1 upper case umlaut characters. Note that this line is parsed three times, so extensive quoting is needed to produce a single backslash.
```plaintext
    termcap hp700 'XC=B\E(K%\E(B,\304[,\326\\\\,\334]'

```
--------------------------------
### Show default key bindings with bindkey -d
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Displays all default key bindings. Application mode entries are marked with [A].
```screen
bindkey -d
```
--------------------------------
### Create a new screen window with a command
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Run from a shell prompt inside an existing screen window to create a new window running the given command (here, emacs editing prog.c) and switch to it. Environment variables from the invoking shell are not passed to the application because it is forked from the parent screen process.
```shell
screen emacs prog.c

```
--------------------------------
### markkeys no-op binding example
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Binds the 'H' and 'L' commands to the no-op character '@' to prevent them from aborting copy mode. Multiple keys can be assigned to one function in a single statement.
```screen
markkeys @=L=H
```
--------------------------------
### Paste a file via the paste buffer with bufferfile
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Sets the exchange file to /etc/passwd, reads it into the paste buffer, pastes it, then restores the default exchange file.
```screen
C-a : bufferfile /etc/passwd
C-a < C-a ]
C-a : bufferfile

```
--------------------------------
### Bind F1 to select window 1
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Binds the F1 key to switch to window one.
```screen
bindkey -k k1 select 1
```
--------------------------------
### Set shelltitle for csh
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
This .screenrc file starts a shell using the given shelltitle. The title is an auto-title that expects the prompt and typed command to look like '/usr/joe/src/dir> trn'. The window status shows 'trn' while the command runs and reverts to 'csh' upon completion.
```screenrc
shelltitle '> |csh'
screen 1

```
--------------------------------
### Exec command: add pager with less
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20261007012157/http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html
Equivalent forms of the exec command that add a pager to the window output. The '|' gives the user control over the pager even though it gets input from the window's process. Note: less versions newer than 177 fail; pg still works.
```shell
|less
```
```shell
exec !..| less
```
