### Tracer Span Creation Methods in Go

Source: https://pkg.go.dev/go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus/%40v0.36.0/internal

Provides methods for starting new spans using the wrapped OpenTelemetry Tracer. This includes starting a span with a name and options, and starting a span with a remote parent context, enabling trace initiation within the OpenCensus bridge.

```go
func (o *Tracer) StartSpan(ctx context.Context, name string, s ...octrace.StartOption) (context.Context, *octrace.Span)
func (o *Tracer) StartSpanWithRemoteParent(ctx context.Context, name string, parent octrace.SpanContext, ...) (context.Context, *octrace.Span)
```

--------------------------------

### Start Child Span - Go

Source: https://pkg.go.dev/go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus/%40v1.36.0/internal

The StartSpan function initiates a new child span. If no parent span exists in the context, it starts a new trace. It returns the updated context and the newly created span.

```go
func (o *Tracer) StartSpan(
	ctx context.Context,
	name string,
	s ...octrace.StartOption,
) (context.Context, *octrace.Span)
```

--------------------------------

### Start New Child Span with Tracer

Implements the StartSpan method for the Tracer. This function starts a new child span, attaching it to the current span in the context. If no span exists, it initiates a new trace.

```go
func (o *Tracer) StartSpan(ctx context.Context, name string, s ...octrace.StartOption) (context.Context, *octrace.Span) {
	// Function implementation would go here
}
```

--------------------------------

### Start Span with Remote Parent using Tracer Wrapper - Go

Source: https://pkg.go.dev/go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus/%40v0.38.0/internal

The StartSpanWithRemoteParent method starts a new span with a specified remote parent context. This is essential for tracing requests that originate from external systems.

```Go
func (o *Tracer) StartSpanWithRemoteParent(ctx context.Context, name string, parent octrace.SpanContext, ...) (context.Context, *octrace.Span)
```

--------------------------------

### OpenCensus Tracer Span Creation (Go)

Source: https://pkg.go.dev/go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus/%40v1.39.0/internal_tab=versions

Shows how to start new spans using the bridged OpenTelemetry Tracer, which wraps an OpenCensus Tracer. This includes starting a span with a name and options, and starting a span with explicit remote parent information. These functions are part of the `opencensus.Tracer` type.

```Go
package opencensus
import (
	"otelbridge "go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus"
	"context "context"
	octrace "go.opencensus.io/trace"
)
// Example of starting spans with a bridged tracer.
func exampleSpanCreation(tracer *otelbridge.Tracer, ctx context.Context) {
	// Start a span with a name
	newCtx, span := tracer.StartSpan(ctx, "mySpan")
	// Start a span with remote parent
	remoteParent := octrace.SpanContext{}
	newCtxWithRemote, spanWithRemote := tracer.StartSpanWithRemoteParent(ctx, "remoteSpan", remoteParent)
}
```

--------------------------------

### OpenCensus to OpenTelemetry Migration Guide

Source: https://pkg.go.dev/go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus/%40v0.30

This guide outlines the steps to migrate an application from using OpenCensus APIs entirely to using OpenTelemetry APIs, leveraging the opencensus bridge.

```APIDOC
## User Journey: Migrating from OpenCensus to OpenTelemetry
This guide outlines the steps to migrate an application from using OpenCensus APIs entirely to using OpenTelemetry APIs, leveraging the opencensus bridge.
### 1. Instantiate OpenTelemetry SDK and Exporters
Before replacing OpenCensus components, set up your OpenTelemetry SDK and desired exporters.
### 2. Replace OpenCensus Exporters with Wrapped OpenTelemetry Exporters
Use the `opencensus.NewMetricExporter` to wrap your OpenTelemetry exporters, making them compatible with OpenCensus.
**Example:** Swapping OpenCensus logging exporter for OpenTelemetry stdout exporter.
```go
import (
	"go.opencensus.io/metric/metricexport"
	"go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus"
	"go.opentelemetry.io/otel/exporters/stdout"
	"go.opentelemetry.io/otel"
)

// Initialize OpenTelemetry exporter
openTelemetryExporter, _ := stdout.New(stdout.WithPrettyPrint())

// Wrap the OpenTelemetry exporter for OpenCensus compatibility
exporter := opencensus.NewMetricExporter(openTelemetryExporter)

// Use the wrapped exporter with OpenCensus metric export mechanisms
intervalReader, _ := metricexport.NewIntervalReader(&metricexport.Reader{}, exporter)
intervalReader.Start()
```
### 3. Migrate Libraries Individually
Gradually replace libraries that use OpenCensus with their OpenTelemetry equivalents.
### 4. Remove OpenCensus Exporters and Configuration
Once all components are migrated, remove the old OpenCensus exporters and related configurations.
### Known Limitations
*   **AddLink Method:** The `AddLink` method for OpenCensus Spans is not compatible with OpenTelemetry Spans once they are started. Calls to this method will result in an error being sent to the OpenTelemetry default ErrorHandler.
*   **NewContext Method:** The `NewContext` method of the OpenCensus Tracer cannot embed an OpenCensus Span in a context unless that Span was created by that Tracer.
*   **Sampler Conversion:** Conversion of custom OpenCensus Samplers to OpenTelemetry is not implemented. Errors will be sent to the OpenTelemetry default ErrorHandler if this is attempted.
```

--------------------------------

### OpenCensus Tracer Wrapper Methods

Source: https://pkg.go.dev/go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus/internal

Implements methods for an OpenCensus Tracer wrapper around an OpenTelemetry Tracer. These methods facilitate context management and span creation.

This function converts a slice of OpenCensus StartOptions into a slice of OpenTelemetry SpanStartOptions, returning an error if conversion fails. This utility is crucial for configuring OpenTelemetry spans when originating from OpenCensus configurations. It requires error handling for potential conversion issues.

```go
func StartOptions(optFuncs []octrace.StartOption) ([]trace.SpanStartOption, error)
```

--------------------------------

### OpenCensus Tracer Interface Implementation (Go)

Source: https://pkg.go.dev/go.opentelemetry.io/otel/bridge/opencensus/%40v1.31.0/internal_tab=versions

This Go code defines the octrace.Tracer interface and its methods for managing tracing contexts and starting spans. It includes functions to retrieve a span from a context, create a new context with a span, start a new span with a name, and start a span with a remote parent. This implementation facilitates the use of OpenCensus tracing patterns with OpenTelemetry.

```Go
type Tracer struct {
	// internal fields
}
func (o *Tracer) FromContext(ctx context.Context) *octrace.Span
func (o *Tracer) NewContext(parent context.Context, s *octrace.Span) context.Context
```APIDOC
## Tracer

### Description
Tracer is an OpenCensus Tracer wrapper for an OpenTelemetry Tracer.

### Methods

#### FromContext
```func (o *Tracer) FromContext(ctx context.Context) *octrace.Span
```

FromContext retrieves the currently active span from the context.

#### NewContext
```func (o *Tracer) NewContext(parent context.Context, s *octrace.Span) context.Context
```

NewContext creates a new context with the given span as the current span.

#### StartSpan
```func (o *Tracer) StartSpan(ctx context.Context, name string, s ...octrace.StartOption) (context.Context, *octrace.Span)
```

StartSpan starts a new span with the given name and options.

#### StartSpanWithRemoteParent
```func (o *Tracer) StartSpanWithRemoteParent(ctx context.Context, name string, parent octrace.SpanContext, ...) (context.Context, *octrace.Span)
```

StartSpanWithRemoteParent starts a new span with the given name and a remote parent span context.
```
