Sets up rcParams for the guide and defines the example_plot helper used throughout. Creates a single axes with layout=None to show default clipping.

```python
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.colors as mcolors
import matplotlib.gridspec as gridspec
plt.rcParams['savefig.facecolor'] = "0.8"
plt.rcParams['figure.figsize'] = 4.5, 4.
plt.rcParams['figure.max_open_warning'] = 50
def example_plot(ax, fontsize=12, hide_labels=False):
    ax.plot([1, 2])
    ax.locator_params(nbins=3)
    if hide_labels:
        ax.set_xticklabels([])
        ax.set_yticklabels([])
    else:
        ax.set_xlabel('x-label', fontsize=fontsize)
        ax.set_ylabel('y-label', fontsize=fontsize)
        ax.set_title('Title', fontsize=fontsize)
fig, ax = plt.subplots(layout=None)
example_plot(ax, fontsize=24)
```

### Setup function for tick formatter example

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/gallery/ticks/tick-formatters.html

Defines a setup function that configures common axis parameters: hides top/left/right spines, sets major and minor tick locators, positions ticks at the bottom, and sets axis limits. Used by all subsequent examples.

```python
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
from matplotlib import ticker
def setup(ax, title):
    """Set up common parameters for the Axes in the example."""
    # only show the bottom spine
    ax.yaxis.set_major_locator(ticker.NullLocator())
    ax.spines[['left', 'right', 'top']].set_visible(False)
    # define tick positions
    ax.xaxis.set_major_locator(ticker.MultipleLocator(1.00))
    ax.xaxis.set_minor_locator(ticker.MultipleLocator(0.25))
    ax.xaxis.set_ticks_position('bottom')
    ax.tick_params(which='major', width=1.00, length=5)
    ax.tick_params(which='minor', width=0.75, length=2.5, labelsize=10)
    ax.set_xlim(0, 5)
    ax.set_ylim(0, 1)
    ax.text(0.0, 0.2, title, transform=ax.transAxes,
            fontsize=14, fontname='Monospace', color='tab:blue')
```

### Pong game setup and animation loop

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/gallery/event_handling/pong_sgskip.html

Sets up the figure, canvas, and Game instance. Disables default key bindings, defines callbacks for redraw and animation start, and runs the animation loop. Prints the frames per second after the plot closes.

```python
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
canvas = ax.figure.canvas
animation = Game(ax)
# disable the default key bindings
if fig.canvas.manager.key_press_handler_id is not None:
    canvas.mpl_disconnect(fig.canvas.manager.key_press_handler_id)
# reset the blitting background on redraw
def on_redraw(event):
    animation.background = None
# bootstrap after the first draw
def start_anim(event):
    canvas.mpl_disconnect(start_anim.cid)
    start_anim.timer.add_callback(animation.draw)
    start_anim.timer.start()
    canvas.mpl_connect('draw_event', on_redraw)
start_anim.cid = canvas.mpl_connect('draw_event', start_anim)
start_anim.timer = animation.canvas.new_timer(interval=1)
tstart = time.time()
plt.show()
print('FPS: %f' % (animation.cnt/(time.time() - tstart)))
```

### Tornado server startup for WebAgg

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/gallery/user_interfaces/embedding_webagg_sgskip.html

Parses command-line arguments for the port, creates the figure and application, and starts the Tornado HTTP server. It prints the listening address and handles Ctrl+C to shut down gracefully.

```python
if __name__ == "__main__":
    parser = argparse.ArgumentParser()
    parser.add_argument('-p', '--port', type=int, default=8080,
                        help='Port to listen on (0 for a random port).')
    args = parser.parse_args()
    figure = create_figure()
    application = MyApplication(figure)
    http_server = tornado.httpserver.HTTPServer(application)
    sockets = tornado.netutil.bind_sockets(args.port, '')
    http_server.add_sockets(sockets)
    for s in sockets:
        addr, port = s.getsockname()[:2]
        if s.family is socket.AF_INET6:
            addr = f'[{addr}]'
        print(f"Listening on http://{addr}:{port}/")
    print("Press Ctrl+C to quit")
    ioloop = tornado.ioloop.IOLoop.instance()
    def shutdown():
        ioloop.stop()
        print("Server stopped")
    old_handler = signal.signal(
        signal.SIGINT,
        lambda sig, frame: ioloop.add_callback_from_signal(shutdown))
    try:
        ioloop.start()
    finally:
        signal.signal(signal.SIGINT, old_handler)
```

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/release/prev_whats_new/whats_new_3.6.0.html

Example of using double-quoted strings in matplotlibrc to define a hex color. Without quotes, the '#' character would be interpreted as the start of a comment.

```ini
grid.color: "#b0b0b0"
```

--------------------------------

### Backend initialization with pylab_setup

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/api/prev_api_changes/api_changes_0.83.html

Shows the new way to import and set up the backend in Matplotlib 0.83. Instead of importing new_figure_manager, draw_if_interactive, and show directly from the default backend, you now call pylab_setup() to obtain them.

```python
from backends import pylab_setup
new_figure_manager, draw_if_interactive, show = pylab_setup()
```

--------------------------------

### Simple example without constrained layout

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/users/explain/axes/constrainedlayout_guide.html

Sets up a helper function and creates a single Axes without constrained layout, showing how labels can be clipped.

```python
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.colors as mcolors
import matplotlib.gridspec as gridspec
plt.rcParams['savefig.facecolor'] = "0.8"
plt.rcParams['figure.figsize'] = 4.5, 4.
plt.rcParams['figure.max_open_warning'] = 50
def example_plot(ax, fontsize=12, hide_labels=False):
    ax.plot([1, 2])
    ax.locator_params(nbins=3)
    if hide_labels:
        ax.set_xticklabels([])
        ax.set_yticklabels([])
    else:
        ax.set_xlabel('x-label', fontsize=fontsize)
        ax.set_ylabel('y-label', fontsize=fontsize)
        ax.set_title('Title', fontsize=fontsize)
fig, ax = plt.subplots(layout=None)
example_plot(ax, fontsize=24)
```

--------------------------------

### Transform subtraction cancellation examples

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/api/transformations.html

Shows how the __sub__ operator composes a transform with the inverse of another, cancelling identical terms when possible. The examples illustrate general subtraction, cancellation when A ends with B, and cancellation when B starts with A. Cancellation avoids floating-point inaccuracies and ensures mutation safety.

```python
# In general:
A - B == A + B.inverted()
# (but see note regarding frozen transforms below).
# If A "ends with" B (i.e. A == A' + B for some A') we can cancel
# out B:
(A' + B) - B == A'
# Likewise, if B "starts with" A (B = A + B'), we can cancel out A:
A - (A + B') == B'.inverted() == B'^-1
```

--------------------------------

### Show locally built docs with make show

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/devel/document.html

Open the locally built documentation in your default browser. The built docs are available in the build/html folder.

```bash
make show
```

--------------------------------

### Request the xr fixture in a test

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/api/testing_api.html

Use the xr fixture to import xarray so that the test is skipped when xarray is not installed. This example shows how to request the fixture by passing xr as an argument.

```python
def test_imshow_xarray(xr):
    ds = xr.DataArray(np.random.randn(2, 3))
    im = plt.figure().subplots().imshow(ds)
    np.testing.assert_array_equal(im.get_array(), ds)
```

### Create example using custom projection

Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/_downloads/11cd5287e12be054c10233b646917055/skewt.ipynb

Creates a simple example using the custom projection. It imports necessary modules, defines sample atmospheric data as a multi-line string, parses it with numpy.loadtxt, and creates a new figure. The code is intended to be run as the main script.

```python
if __name__ == '__main__':
    # Now make a simple example using the custom projection.
    from io import StringIO
    import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
    import numpy as np
    from matplotlib.ticker import MultipleLocator, NullFormatter, ScalarFormatter
### Physical-coordinate circle with resized figure
Source: https://matplotlib.org/stable/_downloads/5386527d666afd4ca59df6c73e7bd9c9/transforms_tutorial.ipynb
Same physical-coordinate circle as the previous example but with a different figure size; demonstrates that the circle keeps its absolute position and gets cropped when the figure is resized.
```python
fig, ax = plt.subplots(figsize=(7, 2))
x, y = 10*np.random.rand(2, 1000)
ax.plot(x, y*10., 'go', alpha=0.2) # plot some data in data coordinates
# add a circle in fixed-coordinates
circ = mpatches.Circle((2.5, 2), 1.0, transform=fig.dpi_scale_trans,
                       facecolor='blue', alpha=0.75)
ax.add_patch(circ)
plt.show()
