### Install just to ~/bin and verify

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html

Complete example of installing `just` to `~/bin` using the install script, adding `~/bin` to PATH, and verifying with `just --help`. Includes comments for each step.

```bash
# create ~/bin
mkdir -p ~/bin
# download and extract just to ~/bin/just
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://just.systems/install.sh | bash -s -- --to ~/bin
# add `~/bin` to the paths that your shell searches for executables
# this line should be added to your shell's initialization file,
# e.g. `~/.bashrc` or `~/.zshrc`
export PATH="$PATH:$HOME/bin"
# just should now be executable
just --help
```

--------------------------------

### Install Just to ~/bin and Add to PATH

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/pre-built-binaries.html

This example demonstrates creating a directory, downloading and installing 'just' into it, and then updating your shell's PATH environment variable to make 'just' executable. Ensure the export command is added to your shell's initialization file (e.g., ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc).

```bash
# create ~/bin
mkdir -p ~/bin
# download and extract just to ~/bin/just
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://just.systems/install.sh | bash -s -- --to ~/bin
# add `~/bin` to the paths that your shell searches for executables
# this line should be added to your shell's initialization file,
# e.g. `~/.bashrc` or `~/.zshrc`
export PATH="$PATH:$HOME/bin"
# just should now be executable
just --help
```

--------------------------------

### Download and install just with install.sh

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html

Downloads and runs the official install script to install `just` to a specified directory. Replace `DEST` with the target directory. The script uses GitHub APIs and may be rate-limited; use `--tag` or set `GITHUB_TOKEN` to avoid issues.

```bash
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://just.systems/install.sh | bash -s -- --to DEST
```

--------------------------------

Example output of running `just` with the previous recipe that echoes `{{home_dir}}`.

```shell
$ just
/home/user1
```

--------------------------------

### Setup dependency runs only once for multiple dependents

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html

Multiple recipes may depend on a recipe that performs setup, and that setup runs only once. The example shows `build` running once even though both `test-foo` and `test-bar` depend on it.

```just
build:
  cc main.c
test-foo: build
  ./a.out --test foo
test-bar: build
  ./a.out --test bar
```

```shell
$ just test-foo test-bar
cc main.c
./a.out --test foo
./a.out --test bar
```

--------------------------------

### Shared Setup Dependency Execution

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/dependencies.html

Illustrates how a setup recipe ('build') is executed only once, even when depended upon by multiple other recipes ('test-foo', 'test-bar').

```justfile
build:
  cc main.c
test-foo: build
  ./a.out --test foo
test-bar: build
  ./a.out --test bar
```

```shell
$ just test-foo test-bar
cc main.c
./a.out --test foo
./a.out --test bar
```

--------------------------------

### Output of require() example

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html

Example output of running `just` with the previous recipe that uses `require("bash")`.

```shell
$ just
bash: '/bin/bash'
```

--------------------------------

### Basic Expression Example

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/expressions-and-substitutions.html

Demonstrates variable assignments using string concatenation and path manipulation within a recipe. Ensure necessary variables like config_dir() are available.

```just
tmpdir  := `mktemp -d`
version := "0.2.7"
tardir  := tmpdir / "awesomesauce-" + version
tarball := tardir + ".tar.gz"
config  := quote(config_dir() / ".project-config")
publish:
  rm -f {{tarball}}
  mkdir {{tardir}}
  cp README.md *.c {{ config }} {{tardir}}
```

```nushell
source just.nu
```

--------------------------------

### Create a justfile with recipes

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html

Create a file named `justfile` in the root of your project with these contents. The first recipe is the default when running `just` with no arguments. Lines starting with `@` suppress command echoing.

```just
recipe-name:
  echo 'This is a recipe!'
# this is a comment
another-recipe:
  @echo 'This is another recipe.'
```

--------------------------------

### Include Activation in Just Prelude

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/activating-environments.html

This example demonstrates how to define a shared prelude in Just that includes environment activation steps. This prelude can then be included in script recipes.

```justfile
prelude := '''
  set -eux
  . .venv/bin/activate
'''
[script]
run:
  {{ prelude }}
  python script.py
```

--------------------------------

### Set shell to nu

hello:
  Write-Host "Hello, world!"

```
--------------------------------
### Basic Argument Splitting Example
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/avoiding-argument-splitting.html
Demonstrates how arguments with spaces are split when not properly quoted in the shell command, leading to unexpected behavior in the Justfile recipe.
```justfile
foo argument:
  touch {{argument}}
```
```shell
$ just foo "some argument.txt"
```
--------------------------------
### Import Execution Example
### Run Python recipes with uv using [script] attribute
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
Configure just to run Python recipes with uv by setting script-interpreter to ['uv', 'run', '--script'] and using the [script] attribute. The example shows a hello recipe that prints "Hello from Python!" and a goodbye recipe (body omitted in source).
```just
set script-interpreter := ['uv', 'run', '--script']

[script]
hello:
  print("Hello from Python!")

[script]
goodbye:

```
--------------------------------
### Recursive just call in the middle of a recipe
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
`just` does not support running recipes in the middle of another recipe, but you can call `just` recursively. The example shows recipe `b` calling `just c` after printing 'B start!', and the output shows the recursive invocation.
```just
a:
  echo 'A!'

b: a
  echo 'B start!'
  just c
  echo 'B end!'

c:
  echo 'C!'

```
```shell
$ just b
echo 'A!'
A!
echo 'B start!'
B start!
echo 'C!'
C!
echo 'B end!'
B end!

```
--------------------------------
### Define recipe with parameter
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
```

--------------------------------

### Unbound Variable Example

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/getting-and-setting-environment-variables.html

This example shows a scenario where a variable is used without being defined or exported, leading to an unbound variable error when the recipe is executed.

```just
# Running `just a foo` will fail with "A: unbound variable"
a $A $B=`echo $A`:
  echo $A $B
```

--------------------------------

### Download Latest Just Release

Source: https://just.systems/man/en/pre-built-binaries.html

@foo bar:
  echo $0
  echo $1

```
```shell
$ just foo hello
foo
hello

```
--------------------------------
### Prior dependencies run before dependent recipe
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
Dependencies run before recipes that depend on them. The example shows recipe `a` depending on `b`, and the output when running `just a`.
```just
a: b
  @echo A

b:
  @echo B

```
```shell
$ just a
B
A

```
--------------------------------
### Short Options
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/recipe-parameters.html
Demonstrates defining a short option and using it.
```justfile
```
__
[arg("bar", short="b")]
foo bar:
```
```
```shell
```
__
$ just foo -b hello
bar=hello
```
```
--------------------------------
### Shebang Recipes are Quiet by Default
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/quiet-recipes.html
Recipes starting with a shebang (e.g., '#!/usr/bin/env bash') are quiet by default, meaning their commands are not printed before execution.
```just
foo:
  #!/usr/bin/env bash
  echo 'Foo!'

```
```shell
$ just foo
Foo!

```
--------------------------------
### Custom timestamp format with [timestamp] attribute
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
Uses a format string with the [timestamp] attribute to customize the timestamp output. The example shows milliseconds in the output.
```just
[timestamp('%H:%M:%S%.3f')]
foo:
  echo hello
```
```shell
$ just foo
[07:28:46.487] echo hello
hello
```
--------------------------------
### Expression-based confirmation prompt with [confirm]
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
Uses an expression in the confirmation prompt that can reference assignments or recipe arguments. The example references the env argument in the prompt.
```just
[confirm("Deploy to " + env + "?")]
deploy env:
  echo 'Deploying to {{env}}...'
```
--------------------------------
### Pass arguments on command line
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/recipe-parameters.html
Invokes the 'build' recipe with argument 'my-awesome-project'.
```shell
$ just build my-awesome-project
Building my-awesome-project…
cd my-awesome-project && make

```
--------------------------------
### Define Basic Recipes in Justfile
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/quick-start.html
Create a 'justfile' to define recipes. Recipes are executed sequentially by default. Use '@' to suppress command output.
```shell
recipe-name:
  echo 'This is a recipe!'

# this is a comment
another-recipe:
  @echo 'This is another recipe.'

```
--------------------------------
### Example of incorrect parsing without quotes
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
Running just search "cat toupee" results in separate words being passed to lynx.
```console
$ just search "cat toupee"
```
--------------------------------
### Quoting substitutions with spaces
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
Substitutions may need quoting if they contain spaces. Example without quotes can cause incorrect command parsing.
```makefile
search QUERY:
  lynx https://www.google.com/?q={{QUERY}}
```
--------------------------------
### Run a just recipe
Source: https://just.systems/man/en
Run a recipe named test-all from the command line. The output shows the commands executed and the final success message.
```shell
$ just test-all
cc *.c -o main
./test --all
Yay, all your tests passed!

```
--------------------------------
### Run default recipe with variable
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
Runs the default recipe (which is 'test' because it depends on 'build') and shows the output using the default variable value.
```shell
$ just
./build linux
./test --test linux
```
--------------------------------
### file_stem(path)
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/functions.html
Returns the file name of a path without its extension. For example, file_stem("/foo/bar.txt") is "bar".
```APIDOC
## file_stem(path)

### Description
Returns the file name of `path` without extension.

### Parameters
- **path** (string) - Required - The path to extract the file stem from.

### Example
`file_stem("/foo/bar.txt")` returns `bar`.
```
--------------------------------
### Define and use an alias for a recipe
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/aliases.html
Shows how to define an alias `b` for the recipe `build` and then invoke it with `just b`. The output shows the echoed command and its result.
```just
alias b := build

build:
  echo 'Building!'
```
```shell
$ just b
echo 'Building!'
Building!
```
--------------------------------
### Demonstrating Persistent Working Directory Issue
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/changing-the-working-directory-in-a-recipe.html
This example shows that `cd` on one line does not affect subsequent lines because each is run in a new shell.
```yaml
foo:
  pwd # This `pwd` will print the same directory…
  cd bar
  pwd    # …as this `pwd`!
```
--------------------------------
### Invert Recipe Meaning with '@' Prefix
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/quiet-recipes.html
Use the '@' prefix before a recipe name to invert the meaning of '@' before each line within that recipe. This makes only lines starting with '@' be echoed.
```just
@quiet:
  echo hello
  echo goodbye
  @# all done!

```
```shell
$ just quiet
hello
goodbye
# all done!

```
--------------------------------
### Execute Recipe with Fallback
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/fallback-to-parent-justfiles.html
Demonstrates executing a recipe ('bar') that is defined in a parent justfile. 'just' will search upwards and find the recipe due to the 'fallback' setting.
```bash
$ just bar
Trying ../justfile
echo bar
bar

```
--------------------------------
### Print recipe summary with --summary
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/print.html
Prints a concise summary of available recipes using the --summary flag.
```shell
$ just --summary
build test deploy lint
```
--------------------------------
### Parameters with default values
Source: https://just.systems/man/en/recipe-parameters.html
Shows a recipe 'test' with parameters 'target' and 'tests' where 'tests' has a default value.
```just
default := 'all'

test target tests=default:
  @echo 'Testing {{target}}:{{tests}}…'
  ./test --tests {{tests}} {{target}}

```
