### Configure startup hardening with GRUB and mask getty

Source: https://docs.ionos.com/cloud/compute-services/compute-engine/confidential-computing-vm/how-tos/hardened-cvm-kernel-howto.md

Create /etc/default/grub.d/20_hardening.cfg to suppress kernel log output and keep the GRUB menu visible during testing, then update-grub. Mask getty.target and serial-getty.target to prevent login prompts on the dark console.

```bash
cat > /etc/default/grub.d/20_hardening.cfg << 'EOF'
# Suppress kernel log output — screen is dark at runtime
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet loglevel=0"
# Keep menu visible during transition (override the default GRUB_TIMEOUT=0)
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
EOF
update-grub
```

```bash
systemctl mask getty.target serial-getty.target
```
